Course Description:

Advance your clinical skills to conduct a thorough grief assessment, and provide your client the most evidence-based effective treatment using an integrated approach. Learn the latest changes to the DSM-5® and the differences between uncomplicated grief, complicated, and traumatic grief and why they are especially important.

Join grief expert Dr. Christina Zampitella, Psy.D., FT and learn how to provide effective and sensitive treatment in counseling the bereaved. You will leave with practical knowledge, tools, and resources that can be applied immediately upon return to your clinical practice to treat not only uncomplicated grief, but also to identify and provide treatment for complicated and traumatic grief. Dr. Zampitella is known for her high energy, interactive and fun workshops, filled with case studies, demonstrations and videos.

Objectives:
  1. List the seven domains of human functioning that are affected by a loss.
  2. Explain how to tailor and conduct an integratively informed assessment.
  3. Differentiate between uncomplicated, complicated, and traumatic grief and other mental health disorders.
  4. Identify the risk factors that can exacerbate grief, which increase the p0ossibility of grief becoming complicated and/or traumatic.
  5. Demonstrate the use of grief assessment tools and apply the findings to treatment.
  6. Explain why the treatment of grief is different than treatment of mental illnesses.
  7. Describe effective ways to help clients move forward in their grieving process.
  8. List alternative modalities of treatment to augment psychotherapy.
  9. Describe how to avoid the pitfalls of countertransference experienced by the practitioner.
  10. Discuss the new grief-related disorders in the DSM-5®.

CHRISTINA ZAMPITELLA, PSYD, FT

Christina Zampitella, PsyD, FT, is a licensed clinical psychologist and a Fellow of Thanatology through the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC). She is the founder and owner of The Center for Grief and Trauma Therapy, co-owner and Director of Clinical Services at Integrative Psychology Group, and a professional speaker. She teaches in undergraduate and graduate level psychology programs for several universities, focusing her courses and publications on death, loss, grief, and trauma. She served as the chair for the Continuing Education Committee for the San Diego Psychological Association from 2007-2009 and the Delaware Psychological Association from 2018-1019. Dr. Zampitella specializes in death, loss, bereavement, integrative psychology, and nature-based therapy. She is the former resident psychologist on Fox 5 News in San Diego and often appeared on NBC News in California and Philadelphia. She has been featured in Elle magazine, BuzzFeed, Washington Post, and The Huffington Post.
