Course Description:

Controversy … change … and one of the most anticipated events in mental health history is here. The DSM-5 (a registered trademark of the American Psychiatric Association) is going to change the way you view, diagnose and treat mental illness.

For the first time ever, the DSM® depends on and incorporates evidence from the neurosciences, genetic studies, twins studies, culture, gender, ethnicity, and overall areas of research that had been largely ignored in previous editions of the DSM®. One of the biggest changes in the new edition is a dramatically fresh approach to diagnostics. The new DSM® is intended to better fit with the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) – requiring a new paradigm and new diagnostic skills.

After years of anticipation, the DSM-5® has been released and this seminar will cover the latest DSM-5® information. Understand the dramatic changes and the implications for all practitioners.

DSM and DSM 5 are registered trademarks of the American Psychiatric Association. The American Psychiatric Association is not affiliated with nor endorses this seminar. For further information, please visit www.dsm5.org.
Objectives:
  1. Discuss clinical, political, economic, theological, and other influences which bring about these changes in diagnostic classifications.
  2. List at least 7 controversial changes to be included in the DSM-5®.

  4. Discuss ethical issues that mental health professionals may encounter as a result of this new diagnostic tool.
  5. Explore changes in diagnosing children and adolescent mental health conditions.
  6. Assess the nature of trauma disorders and how the DSM-5® will affect treatment.
  7. Address the DSM-5® methodologies regarding medical disorders.
