For the first time ever, the DSM® depends on and incorporates evidence from the neurosciences, genetic studies, twins studies, culture, gender, ethnicity, and overall areas of research that had been largely ignored in previous editions of the DSM®. One of the biggest changes in the new edition is a dramatically fresh approach to diagnostics. The new DSM® is intended to better fit with the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) – requiring a new paradigm and new diagnostic skills.

- Discuss clinical, political, economic, theological, and other influences which bring about these changes in diagnostic classifications.
- List at least 7 controversial changes to be included in the DSM-5®.
- Describe how these changes and updates may affect your clinical practice.
- Discuss ethical issues that mental health professionals may encounter as a result of this new diagnostic tool.
- Explore changes in diagnosing children and adolescent mental health conditions.
- Assess the nature of trauma disorders and how the DSM-5® will affect treatment.
- Address the DSM-5® methodologies regarding medical disorders.
- Identify significant changes regarding suicide, self-mutilation, dissociation and addiction disorders.
THOMAS SMITH, P.D., FASCP, LMHC, NCP, BCCP
Tom Smith, P.D., FASCP, LMHC, NCP, BCC, is a Doctor of Pharmacy, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, a Nationally Certified Psychologist, and a Board Certified Clinical Counselor. He holds academic appointments at Butler School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the Saint Louis University School of Graduate Nursing, and the University of Phoenix. Tom is a Fellow of the American Society of Consulting Pharmacists.
Tom has spoken on Bipolar Disorder, the DSM-5®, and psychopharmacology throughout the United States. He is the author of Psychopharmacology Made Simple: A Primer, and he is internationally published on the topic of Aromatherapy.
Tom maintains an active private practice in Martinsville, Indiana, where he works with clients of all ages.
