Course Description:

Our understanding of selective mutism and social anxiety disorder is quickly evolving. Attend this seminar and learn the latest developments and research related to the cause and treatment of these disorders.

You will discover integrated approach to treatment, combining both psychotherapy and school-based interventions with therapists, speech-language pathologists and educators playing key roles.

This seminar will feature:
  • Specific techniques for day-to-day management of selective mutism
  • Techniques to reduce anxiety and expand communication
  • Methods for school personnel to adapt CBT techniques
  • Techniques for children with other forms of social anxiety
  • Special focus on application for preschool and elementary students

Objectives:
  1. Explain the relationship between selective mutism and anxiety disorders.
  2. Identify the current scientific/professional models regarding the cause and treatment of selective mutism.
  3. Develop specific treatment programs for children with selective mutism.
  4. Adapt CBT techniques for application with young children who have mutism.
  5. Adapt counseling/therapy techniques to assist parents/families of children who have selective mutism.
  6. Describe how to help classroom teachers learn to differentiate instruction/assessment for children who have selective mutism.

ROBERT SCHUM, PHD

Robert Schum, Ph.D.,clinical psychologist, is professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was previously the director of the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Clinic at the University of Iowa. Dr. Schum served as chief of the Section of Psychology at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He is a member of the American Psychological Association as well as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Dr. Schum has presented more than 100 workshops and is the author of many articles and chapters, including “Clinical Perspectives on the Treatment of Selective Mutism” which was published in the Journal of Speech-Language Pathology and Applied Behavioral Analysis (2006). The focus of Dr. Schum’s clinical services, teaching and research is the assessment and treatment of children who have communication disorders. He is active in providing psychotherapy to children who have selective mutism.
