Course Description:

Attend this seminar and get the latest, updated Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques as newly released by MI founders Drs. Miller and Rollnick. Join experienced MI trainer, Mary O’Leary, PhD, member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and learn how to integrate MI skills into your practice – newly adapted for common clinical problems beyond addiction treatment.

Take away the four process approach to MI that now make the skills more accessible and useful in your everyday clinical practice. This seminar shows you how MI can be used to enhance engagement in treatments other than MI. Learn evidence-based skills to adapt and integrate MI with other treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Interpersonal and Social Rhythms Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. This seminar also addresses the time-crunch dilemma of many clinicians, and teaches specific ways to use MI for more brief counseling sessions.

Objectives:
  1. Identify the relational and technical components that make MI work.
  2. Explain how the 4 processes and OARS skills of MI help change happen.
  3. Explore ways to elicit and respond effectively to change talk.
  4. Discuss specific ways to help your clients resolve ambivalence and talk themselves into change.
  5. Develop strategies for working effectively with clients who seem “resistant” to change.
  6. Summarize how to effectively use MI with specific disorders.
