Course Description:
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that is challenging to diagnose and even more challenging to effectively treat. This clinically applicable workshop will equip speech-language pathologists to become more confident and competent in the differential diagnoses and treatment of CAS and other childhood motor speech disorders.
You will receive instruction and hands-on practice learning how to structure therapy and develop stimuli that is:
Attendees will have opportunity for hands-on practice using Dynamic Tactile Temporal Cueing (DTTC) and other evidence-based approaches. Demonstrations and video examples of actual therapy sessions will be shown throughout the workshop.

This clinically applicable workshop will equip speech-language pathologists to become more confident and competent in the differential diagnoses and treatment of CAS and other childhood motor speech disorders.

- Client-specific
- Functional and rewarding for varying ages and severity
- Incorporates principles of neuroplasticity and motor learning
- Facilitates early literacy development
Attendees will have opportunity for hands-on practice using Dynamic Tactile Temporal Cueing (DTTC) and other evidence-based approaches. Demonstrations and video examples of actual therapy sessions will be shown throughout the workshop.
Objectives:
- Identify the key characteristics of CAS.
- Differentially diagnose apraxia of speech from phonological delay, dysarthria, and other communication disorders that result in speech delay.
- Explain how to apply the principles of neuroplasticity to the treatment of CAS.
- Plan effective assessment and treatment for children with CAS, using the five system hierarchy.
- Implement treatment for children using CAS with Dynamic Tactile Temporal Cueing.
- Demonstrate how to incorporate literacy into treatment sessions.
NANCY POTTER, PHD, CCC-SLP
Nancy Potter, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an associate professor at Washington State University in Spokane. Dr. Potter is an experienced clinician who has worked in public schools, university clinics, hospitals, private practice, and tele-practice settings. Her federally funded research program is focused on identifying and treating motor speech disorders in children and adolescents. Dr. Potter has published and presented her research nationally and internationally. She and her colleague, Dr. Amy Skinder-Meredith, run an intensive summer day camp for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and their families. The camp focuses on motor speech, early literacy, language, parent education, and positive well-being. Dr. Potter has given numerous workshops for practicing speech-language pathologists across the country on assessment and treatment of CAS and Childhood Dysarthria (DYS). She earned her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the mentorship of Dr. Ray Kent and Dr. Larry Shriberg.
