Course Description:

After close to 30 years of categorical evaluation of symptoms of mental illness, the American Psychiatric Association’s decision to fundamentally change how behaviors and symptoms of human expression are diagnosed has set off a flurry of controversy. The DSM-5 (a registered trademark of the American Psychiatric Association) is going to change the way you view, diagnose and treat mental illness. Practical implications of this new approach include potential for services being denied where the diagnostic criteria are more stringent, to others being included where the criteria have broadened.

The new DSM-5® is intended to bring diagnosis of mental disorders into the 21st century. Some of the primary goals are to standardize the assessment, data collection, and evaluation of symptoms of mental illness across the fields of research, education and service-delivery.

As a clinician, your income may depend on your ability to correctly identify symptoms and dimensional functioning issues in your clients as well as evaluating for suicide risk and substance use across the development spectrum. Are you ready?

DSM and DSM 5 are registered trademarks of the American Psychiatric Association. The American Psychiatric Association is not affiliated with nor endorses this seminar. For further information, please visit www.dsm5.org.
Objectives:
  1. Identify the current and future implications of the changes to the DSM®.
  2. Determine how to locate “new” diagnoses and “find” old diagnoses in the revised organization of the manual (‘What’s out and what’s in’).
  3. Explain the philosophical and practical differences between dimensional diagnosis and categorical diagnoses.
  4. Apply the dimensional approach to treatment planning, documentation of progress, and billing for services (including ICD-10 coding).
  5. Increase awareness of the ethical issues posed by DSM-5® changes and how they will impact your practice.
