Behaviors such as dementia, aggression, anxiety and depression, refusal of food and fluids, and inappropriate sexual advances pose significant potential barriers to the delivery of essential health care. - Assess behavioral problems of older adults with cognitive disturbances.
- Compare and contrast the types, essential features, and stages of dementia.
- Describe the advantages of recognition and treatment of early dementia.
- Summarize non-pharmacologic interventions that address the biopsychosocial needs of the older adult with challenging behaviors.
- Implement specific communication strategies for patients with challenging behaviors.
- Analyze evidence-based pharmacologic treatments of behavioral problems in patients.
- Outline interventions for challenging geriatric behaviors including pain, nutritional deficits, sleep disorders, depression and delerium.
- Evaluate causes and interventions for sexually inappropriate behaviors.
- Support and educate family and professional caregivers of older adults exhibiting challenging behaviors.
M. CATHERINE WOLLMAN, DNP, RN, GNP-BC, CRNP
M. Catherine Wollman, DNP, RN, GNP-BC, CRNP, has been a gerontological nurse practitioner for over 25 years, caring for older adults in acute care, long-term care and home care. Catherine has served as the director of senior health for a large hospital system offering a full spectrum of services, including prevention, acute care, and rehabilitation. In this capacity, she managed outpatient services for seniors and cared for 100 high-risk older adults. As a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania, she worked with a nationally-recognized transitional care program for high-risk older adults. She teaches clinical GNP students in Pennsylvania.
