Learner Objectives:

  1. Describe the physiological mechanism driving the changes seen in postoperative patients.
  2. List the types of sedation and their indications for use.
  3. Give examples of targeted assessment strategies for geriatric, obese and diabetic patients.
  4. Explain the interventions utilized for a patient experiencing malignant hyperthermia.
  5. Document accurately in intraoperative reports.
  6. Identify whether or not a fast-track recovery strategy is appropriate for your patients.
  7. Summarize the use of prophylactic anti-emetics to prevent the occurrence of post-anesthesia nausea and vomiting.

SHANNON SPIES INGERSOLL, DNP, CRNA

Shannon Spies Ingersoll is a certified nurse anesthetist who has practiced in a variety of healthcare organizations. She has provided anesthesia care for patients varying from outpatient day surgery to complex cases, including trauma. Before achieving her Masters of Science in Anesthesia from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Shannon received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Winona State University. She spent the beginning of her nursing career at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. Trained in Mayo's Critical Care Internship, Shannon provided critical care on a Thoracic/Vascular intensive care unit where post-anesthesia patients would come directly after their specialty surgeries. Besides being a practitioner, Shannon is an educator and mentor. She has also taught for the only doctoral prepared nurse anesthesia program in the state of Minnesota, The University of Minnesota VA Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Program.

Shannon received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Metropolitan State University in Saint Paul. Her doctoral work has led to innovative paths in nursing. As for professional affiliations, Shannon is a member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and its Doctoral Mentorship, Caring International Research Collaborative, Watson Caring Science Institute and Sigma Theta Tau International. Shannon's dedication and passion for her profession and practice continue with her ongoing research addressing present changes in systems. She enjoys engaging, empowering and energizing her audiences with her presentations and personal experiences.
