Course Description:
When a patient presents with chest pain and/or difficulty breathing, it is frightening for the patient and, as a clinician, you want to get to the source of the matter quickly. Attend this up-to-date and practical seminar and learn how to appropriately assess your patient’s symptoms and arrive at an accurate intervention.

Cathy Lockett will teach you how to use specific diagnostic tests designed to evaluate the origin of chest pain and dyspnea, as well as current evidence-based management guidelines to implement appropriate treatment. She will teach you how to assess your patient’s initial presentation, order diagnostic testing, perform differential diagnosis, and select the right treatment.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Describe the basic pathophysiology of dyspnea and state the psychological impact on the patient.
  2. Differentiate cardiac from pulmonary dyspnea.
  3. Understand pathophysiology and treatments of COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension and pneumonia.
  4. Accurately diagnosis and treat acute tension pneumothorax.
  5. Describe the mechanism of Acute Coronary Syndrome and evaluate EKG for ischemia vs. infarction.
  6. Recognize cor pulmonale and pulmonary embolus on EKG and list treatment modalities.
  7. Differentiate hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) from aortic stenosis.
  8. Identify the mechanisms of heart failure and state treatments.

CATHY LOCKETT, RN, MHA, BSN, CCRN-K

CATHY LOCKETT, RN, MHA, BSN, CCRN-K Cathy Lockett, RN, MHA, BSN, CCRN-K., has been practicing critical care nursing for over 35 years. Her critical care background includes working in medical, surgical, neuro, cardiac, cardiovascular care, and critical care transport with most of her clinical experience in the areas of medical cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. She has provided cardiovascular care in the role of staff nurse, preceptor, educator, supervisor and manager.

Utilizing her vast knowledge and experience, Cathy has presented on numerous topics related to cardiac and pulmonary care, including advanced and basic EKG interpretation, the heart in detail, hemodynamic monitoring, basic and advanced arrhythmia, pulmonary diseases and IABP therapy. Additionally, Cathy is a Training Center Faculty member for the American Heart Association in the disciplines of Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Cathy is also a former co-owner of an educational healthcare company.

Cathy’s teaching style is dynamic and high-energy while remaining informal and easy to understand. Attending this seminar will enhance your learning experience, improve your long-term retention of key concepts and provide more effective patient care.
