Course Description:
Children and adolescents presenting with neurological disorders comprise a challenging and complex patient population. Spend the day with pediatric neurology expert, Jo Grant, and learn the latest information regarding the identification, evaluation and treatment strategies for childhood neurological disorders.

  1. Assess the effects that injuries to the newborn brain have on normal neurological development.
  2. Describe the various symptoms of shaken baby syndrome and possible outcomes.
  3. Summarize the behavior and learning issues seen in children who suffer traumatic brain injury.
  4. Differentiate between seizures seen in infancy, early childhood and adolescence.
  5. Compare pharmacological and alternative/complementary treatment options for headaches and migraines.
  6. Summarize characteristics of children with Tourette Syndrome and describe various therapies and treatment options.
  7. Describe current strategies and multidisciplinary implications in the management of Cerebral Palsy.
  8. Describe effective therapeutic interventions that improve autistic behaviors.
  9. List diagnostic criteria used to identify genetic syndromes including Rett Syndrome, Fragile X, Neurofibromatosis, Tuberous Sclerosis and Muscular Dystrophy.

JO GRANT, BSN, MS, MSN, CPNP

Jo Grant is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner who works exclusively with children in a general pediatric neurology clinic in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Jo graduated from Emory University with a Masters Degree in Child Health and also has a Masters Degree in Health Services Administration from St. Francis University. Drawing upon her 30+ years of pediatric nursing experience, Jo will deliver valuable information that is sure to increase your understanding and management skills when caring for children with neurological and developmental disabilities.

Jo's commitment and passion to her practice specialty are reflected through leadership and committee positions served regionally, at the state level, and nationally. She is a sought-after local and national speaker to school nurses. Additionally, she is a nationally-recognized presenter for healthcare professionals, having earned a reputation for her ability to deliver engaging presentations as she draws upon a wealth of real-life clinical experiences.
