Course Description:
Attend this seminar and learn how to effectively treat the mental health problems in the new generation of warzone veterans returning from America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. You will leave the seminar with knowledge about the DSM-5®, how Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related problems present in warzone veterans generally.
Dr. Mundt will draw on more than 20 years of clinical work with combat veterans to provide insight on the typical experiences of deployment, “homecoming” and readjustment, since a solid understanding of these experiences goes far in helping a clinician recognize the psychological symptoms and behavior that they produce and in engaging the veteran client in treatment. Learn about Traumatic Brain Injury and other frequently concurrent problems like suicidality, substance abuse and aggression will also be provided, and we will take a look at the impact of warzone service on the veteran’s family system.
With the dazzling array of approaches and techniques currently available for working with veterans, many clinicians can find it challenging to incorporate the treatment of these special clients into their existing practice settings. This seminar offers practical and concrete techniques that apply to clinical work with traumatized veterans (including concrete tactics for that crucial first session!) that will transcend any specific orientation to therapy or any particular mental health provider’s background. Commonly used therapeutic approaches, including some of the more widely applied evidence-based treatments, will be summarized and critiqued, and considerations for the use of groups and other modalities of therapy will be examined.

Objectives:
- Recognize and discuss the clinical presentation of psychological trauma in veterans, in terms of symptoms and syndromes in the DSM-5®.
- Describe the typical warzone experiences of today’s combat veteran, and understand their relationship with subsequent symptoms and behavior problems.
- Identify the pros and cons of applying specific trauma-focused therapy approaches in their own clinical setting.
- Describe the process of assessing and engaging a new client with PTSD while maintaining an active focus on the client’s “real world” issues.
- Describe the impact of both warzone deployment and homecoming on family and partners.
- Avoid common therapist mistakes or errors in working with traumatized veterans.
- Recognize at least three clinical challenges which may interfere with a treatment plan.
- Identify the impact of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and cognitive impairment on mental health treatment for veterans.
JOHN MUNDT, PHD
John Mundt, Ph.D., presents nationally on the topics of trauma and other mental health issues in the returning combat veterans. Dr. Mundt is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who has experience in working with clients of all ages and from across the diagnostic spectrum. His work with traumatized veterans is pragmatic, often crisis-focused, and incorporates the realities of their situation, community and culture. He has been a staff psychologist at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (Chicago, IL) for over 20 years, providing both long-term and time-limited psychotherapy, as well as psychological assessment and case management for veterans. For over 15 years, Dr. Mundt has been the psychologist in the medical center's acute-care partial hospitalization program, with a focus on brief treatment of PTSD stemming from combat, sexual assault and inner-city violence as well as other sources of trauma. In addition to psychotherapy, his approach to treatment in this setting emphasizes intensive psychoeducation as well as aggressive case management and advocacy for veterans in the program.
In his private practice, Dr. Mundt has engaged individuals, couples and families around a range of issues, including post-traumatic reactions. He has been an assistant professor of psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago since 1994. Dr. Mundt holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
