Course Description:
Diabetes is an epidemic. One in three children born in 2000 will have diabetes in their lifetime. Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a silent epidemic affecting almost 1 in 10 pregnant women. If you work in a perinatal setting, you need to know how to manage GDM. Join Darcy J. Hostetter-Lewis, an expert in the field of gestational diabetes, as she shares insights garnered from years of high risk obstetrical nursing. Topics covered include:

Learner Objectives:

  1. Summarize current GDM screening and diagnosis recommendations, noting the impact of the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome study (HAPO) on these recommendations.
  2. Integrate perinatal practice strategies to counsel patients regarding the long- and short-term risks of hyperglycemia to the mother, fetus, and offspring.
  3. Relate the use of the AADE 7 self-management skills when educating women with gestational diabetes.
  4. State blood glucose targets and self-monitoring frequencies.
  5. Describe the principles of a healthy eating plan.
  6. Discuss the relationship between staying active and maintaining blood glucose targets.
  7. Identify tools to assess coping with stress, readiness for change and level of motivation for women experiencing diabetes during pregnancy.
  8. Explain how to use insulin and oral agents safely and accurately to achieve normoglycemia during antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum.

DARCY J. HOSTETTER-LEWIS, MSN, RN, PHN, PNE, CLE

Darcy J. Hostetter-Lewis works as a labor and delivery nurse and teaches child birth education classes providing enhanced pregnancy services to women enrolled in the California Perinatal Services Program. Her areas of interest in perinatal health include breastfeeding education, diabetes in pregnancy and caring for women with perinatal substance abuse problems. She is currently a member of the local Sweet Success, California Diabetes in Pregnancy Program multidisciplinary team providing diabetes management and education for women diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy. Her work at a Family Health Center also includes providing breastfeeding education to women in her community through Feather River Hospital's Center for Breastfeeding Support.

Darcy holds a Master's Degree in Perinatal Education and her career caring for the perinatal community began in 1998 when she received her certification in lactation education, enabling her to volunteer as a lactation educator in a local hospital and provide new mothers with anticipatory guidance to increase the rate of breastfeeding in the community. Darcy has been a member of the faculty at California State University, Chico since 2006, where she has had the opportunity to educate students in fundamentals, medical/surgical nursing, obstetrics and pediatric nursing. Her background also includes case management of high risk pregnant and postpartum women, and she was actively involved in developing a home visit program for high risk mothers and their newly delivered babies in her community.
