Course Description:
Your clinical skills are tested daily in cognitive-communication rehabilitation. You see clients who are clinically more complex, and deal with ever-changing insurance regulations and increased productivity demands that leave you with minimal time for creative treatment planning. Attend this seminar and learn quick assessment tools for skilled intervention; spend half of the day focusing on treatment-specific strategies. Through class discussions, case studies and a comprehensive resource manual full of creative and functional treatment approaches, you will learn how to optimize levels of alertness and sustained attention utilizing both pharmaceutical and clinical interventions. You will also learn strategies for organization, time management, documentation, scheduling and more!

Learner Objectives:

  1. Identify 8 examples of executive cognitive functions.
  2. Recognize the expanding role of non-verbal communication in the 21st century.
  3. Differentiate examples of reversible versus non-reversible dementia syndromes.
  4. Specify 4 examples of informal cognitive-communication assessment procedures.
  5. Reiterate clinical challenges to effective cognitive-communication rehabilitation.
  6. State 4 specific non-pharmaceutical approaches to maximizing sustained levels of alertness in a neurologically-impaired patient.
  7. Identify at least 6 new multimedia therapy activities applicable to cognitive-communication rehabilitation.
  8. Summarize currently available community-based resources for more efficient discharge planning.

GINA ENGLAND, MA, CCC-SLP

Gina England, MA, CCC-SLP, has been a clinical speech pathologist in New Hampshire for over 30 years. During this time, she has worked in a variety of clinical settings across the medical continuum of care including acute care, acute inpatient rehab, skilled nursing, outpatient therapy and neurological day treatment programs. Gina's areas of interest and specialty have included cognitive rehabilitation, aphasia, motor speech, dysphagia and pediatric aquatic speech therapy. Since 2011, Gina has developed a private practice that focuses on the ongoing provision of direct clinical services and the participation in education and training workshops/ seminars across the United States.

Gina has presented at numerous state associations' annual conferences, including the New Hampshire and Vermont Brain Injury Associations and the New Hampshire Multiple Sclerosis Society. In addition to her role as a public speaker, she has also been a part time clinical supervisor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of New Hampshire. She is also adjunct faculty at Granite State College and Nashua Community College, both of which are in New Hampshire.

Gina maintains a New Hampshire state license and ASHA certification in Speech Pathology. She also serves on the governing board for the New Hampshire Speech, Language and Hearing Association as the vice-president for Professional Development. Gina welcomes the opportunity to share her humorous and engaging style of presentation, which allows continuing education to be both fun and functional.
