Course Description:
As a nurse practicing in today's litigious society, it is essential that the care you provide is documented in a manner that protects you from legal liability. Proper, concise, thorough and timely documentation is your best defense should the quality of care you provided - or supervised - ever be questioned, days, months or years after it was provided.

Attend this comprehensive program and learn how to ensure that your documentation depicts a level of care that meets all applicable standards and passes Joint Commission scrutiny, as well as your own facility' s review. Your speaker, Elizabeth Beall, practiced as an RN for over twenty years, primarily in intensive care nursing. Drawing on her clinical and legal background, she delivers a program rich with real-life examples, sound advice and keen insights.
Please refer to the course brochure for continuing education information.
Learner Objectives:

  1. Explain how to properly correct errors in documentation and why improper correction may lead to possible legal issues.
  2. Demonstrate how and when to abbreviate when documenting care.
  3. Summarize HIPAA and electronic privacy requirements.
  4. Describe what works well, and why, for each type of documentation system.
  5. Utilize correct and accurate documentation processes to avoid medication errors.
  6. Explain how to document correctly when situations are stressful or sensitive.
  7. Describe three areas of ethical concerns for nurses.
