Mervin R. Smucker, PhD, is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he is involved in ongoing trauma treatment outcome research. Dr. Smucker is also Clinical Director of the Trauma Treatment Program at Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee, where he recently founded the International Trauma Institute. Dr. Smucker previously trained and worked with Dr. Aaron T. Beck at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and more recently has published and worked collaboratively with Dr. Edna Foa. Recognized for his creative and innovative applications of imagery in cognitive therapy, Dr. Smucker has conducted many workshops and seminars on trauma and PTSD throughout the United States and the world since 1990. Dr. Smucker is a skilled clinician and researcher, who meaningfully integrates theory and research with clinical practice and presents his work in a refreshingly clear, lively and engaging manner. He was a workshop presenter at the 2004 World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy in Japan, and is presenting at the 2005 International Congress of Cognitive Psychotherapy in Sweden and the 2005 European Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies in Greece. He is a regular consultant-trainer at numerous international psychiatric training sites. He has authored many scholarly articles on the topic of trauma, the most recent of which pertain to a newly developed algorithm treatment model for PTSD. Dr. Smucker has also published a book on his imagery-based treatment for trauma victims entitled Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Adult Survivors of Childhood Trauma: Imagery Rescripting and Reprocessing (1999), as well as a treatment manual Imagery Rescripting and Reprocessing Therapy CIRRT): A Treatment Manual for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse Experiencing PTSD (2005).
